Elegance Tip #10: Don't Be Afraid to Get Dirty

No matter how well dressed you may be, if you won't get down and play on the floor with your children, you're losing out on an opportunity to be elegant.

This is why I'm such an advocate for leggings. At any given moment I want to be able to plop down on the floor and sit with my daughter while she plays with her doll. I want to be able to jump off the couch and dance with her when her favorite song ("Defying Gravity" from Wicked) comes on. I want to chase her through the house and listen to her giggle.

One of my favorite memories in my daughter's (almost) two years is sitting with her in a shallow hole dug in the sand filled with muddy sea water in my brand new Marilyn Monroe swimsuit. I'm sure my legs didn't look attractive, I'm sure I was showing off the fat in my arms and back and stomach, and I'm pretty okay with the fact that no one got a picture. But Miss K didn't care. She was just having a great time telling her mommy a story.

So no matter what you're wearing, remember that elegance sometimes means letting go of your pride, ignoring the dirt, and jumping into the sand with your kids (or nieces and nephews or grand-kids). Dirt can be cleaned away and clothing can be replaced, but our kids' childhood is fleeting.
